Using Apple Watch for a mindful pause
An Apple Watch puts a short pause within reach without opening a conversation on your phone. Choose a suitable moment, stop what you are doing, and decide how to respond afterward.

What can you try on Apple Watch today?
Apple's own Mindfulness app offers Reflect and Breathe sessions. For a reflection session, open Mindfulness, choose Reflect, read the prompt, and begin when ready. For breathing, choose Breathe and follow the guidance only while it feels comfortable. Apple documents these controls in its Reflect and Breathe user guide.
Before starting, decide what you want the pause to support: listening to the end of a sentence, asking for clarification, or waiting before replying. When you finish, return to that action rather than assuming a completed exercise has resolved the situation.
Can Apple Watch remind you to pause?
Apple provides mindfulness reminder settings, including scheduled reminders and an option to mute them for the day. Follow Apple's instructions for mindfulness reminders if that is the feature you are looking for.
These are features of Apple's Mindfulness app. PAUSE's current Watch experience starts when you choose to start it; it does not detect anger, decide that you need a break, or automatically start an exercise when a message arrives.
What is PAUSE building for the wrist?
PAUSE is in development for iOS 17 or later and watchOS 10 or later. Its current Apple Watch experience is part of PAUSE Pro and provides a direct start button, breathing and duration options, optional haptic guidance, and controls to stop, finish, or repeat a pause. A Watch-face complication offers another entry point.
You can choose a breathing technique on the Watch or follow the choice from your iPhone. There is also an own-rhythm option without a paced breathing pattern. The Watch interface is for the immediate exercise; your private preparation writing and reflection notes are not available on the wrist.
Does PAUSE need the iPhone nearby?
Initial setup and Pro access validation need PAUSE on your iPhone. After access has been validated, the Watch can run sessions offline while that access remains valid. Completed sessions are stored for transfer to the iPhone when it becomes reachable.
If access needs to be checked again, open PAUSE on the iPhone and use the Watch's access-check option. Offline use does not mean permanent access without revalidation. For help, visit PAUSE support.
Choose a pause that fits the situation
Try the controls and haptic settings when you have time, so you do not need to learn them during a difficult conversation. If looking at your wrist would be distracting or inappropriate, ask for a moment or use a short internal cue instead.
You do not need a wearable or a breathing exercise to choose a different response. Use the pause-before-reacting steps on their own, and reflect afterward on what helped you. Needing less guidance can be a useful outcome too.
About PAUSE
PAUSE is coming soon to iPhone. The wrist experience is included in PAUSE Pro. Apple’s built-in Mindfulness app and the practical steps above work without it.
